EXPERIENCE STRUISBAAI

Experience the warm, aquamarine waters and the longest natural beach in the southern hemisphere that this small Overberg fishing town possesses. Situated just a stone’s throw from Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa where the two Indian and Atlantic oceans meet, this spot offers a wealth of scenic views of the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, shipwrecks, enjoy some seasonal whale-watching, go on horse rides along the beach and cool off by swimming and diving in the balmy beach water.

VENTURE OUT TO ELGIN VALLEY

Elgin Valley is one of the most under-marketed wine areas of the Western Cape. Hosting some of South Africa’s award-winning wine estates, adrenaline-inducing mountain bike tracks and remote getaway cabins which are all tucked away in a natural paradise, this makes it a definite spot to check out. This valley is slightly less polished and visitors will be instantly charmed by its unassuming beauty and providing every outdoor adventurer’s playground with hiking routes through the rugged Boland mountains and world-class mountain biking trails. There are also a number of wine farms on the Elgin Wine Route that have top-notch restaurants onsite and most pride themselves on sourcing local produce where possible. Elgin is just an hour’s drive east of Cape Town and is perfect for a picturesque day trip or relaxing country getaway.

ENJOY SOME CRAYFISH AT PATERNOSTER

Another small and picturesque fishing village is Paternoster and it is one of the oldest fishing towns along the West Coast with beautiful white houses, colorful fishing boats, cozy beaches, stunning sunsets and lots of crayfish. This authentic fishing village has more to offer than fresh kreef (that’s crayfish for the non-locals). Discover a wealth of bird life and spot whales and dolphins from the shore, go on beach walks by day (if the wind’s not howling) and dine on fresh seafood at night. Nature lovers should definitely spend a day or two exploring the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, a vast stretch of beautiful coastline with plenty of secluded beaches and hidden coves.

EXPERIENCE THE SERENITY OF NATURE’S VALLEY

Visiting Nature’s Valley is like discovering a lost village in the midst of a jungle. Situated on the famed Garden Route and surrounded by forests, mountains and white-sand beaches, the small village of around 50 houses and has but one store and no malls. It’s clear that locals are intent on preserving the beauty and tranquillity of this hidden gem. Check out Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, both located within 20 minutes drive of Nature’s Valley. The monkey sanctuary has around 11 species of primates, who roam freely in the protected forest area, while Birds of Eden’s free flight bird sanctuary hosts around 3 500 birds from over 220 species.

ENJOY THE SCENERY AT DE RUST

De Rust is a charming village where ostriches and Victorian architecture abound. Take in the scenic views of the rolling hills and majestic mountain ranges that provide ample inspiration for the many artists and sculptors who have made their home here. Get to explore the Meiringspoort Waterfall which is around 60 metres high and drops down into a crystal-clear pool. This mountain oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as being a popular picnic spot. 

CHECK OUT ARNISTON VILLAGE

This idyllic fishing village near Cape Agulhas is fringed by a tranquil turquoise ocean and white-sandy beaches with the surrounding nature reserves lending it natural beauty and an interesting history. Take a trip to Waenhuiskrans Cave which is partially submerged and can only be reached during low tide, but it’s worth scampering over the rocky seabed. The dark interior contrasts dramatically with the vibrant ocean outside. 

HANG OUT AT SHELLY BAY BEACH

Shelly Bay Beach at St Helena Bay is a great place to take a stroll and find an interesting selection of shells. It is also famous for its amazing sunsets and surfing, sailing, diving and snorkelling are very popular due to the abundant sea life.

SWIM WITH CROCODILES

Need a little more than shark cage diving? Then you will enjoy an up close and personal experience with one of Africa’s most powerful predators, crocodiles, from the safety of a secure cage at Le Bonheur in Paarl.

HANG OUT AT A LESSER-KNOWN BEACH NEAR SIMONS TOWN

Explore Windmill Beach, a sheltered nook featuring fantastic views of the False Bay coastline with a large, natural pool perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

DISCOVER A HIDDEN WATERFALL

Not too many people know about Silvermine Waterfall, but it is a great place to spot sunbirds flitting amongst the profusion of fynbos, proteas, ericas, watsonias, pelargoniums, everlastings and a horde of other plants. The best time to see the waterfall at its most dramatic is in winter and it usually runs dry in summer.

HIDEAWAY AT QUEEN’S BEACH

Hidden from plain sight, Queen’s Beach is known as Sea Point’s forgotten beach situated within walking distance of the promenade. Expect to swim in chilly waters from the Benguela current when visiting.

EXPERIENCE CHAPMAN’S PEAK DRIVE

Nothing beats a drive along the windswept Atlantic Coast and Chapman’s Peak captures the ocean road at its most spectacular. Enjoy a hair raising experience with near-vertical cliffs and blind bends. This drive begins in the fishing village of Hout Bay and winds its way up to Chapman’s Point before ending at Noordhoek. The ocean views are beautiful along the entire route but the best views are from Chapman’s Point, the highest point of the drive!
